The McHenry County Music Center (MCMC) began as the McHenry County Youth Orchestra Foundation on August 31, 1980 after the area string programs were cut from the schools. It began with just fourteen players and started in the basement of our founder, the late Dr. Marie Ann Vos.
In 1986, the Music Academy was established to provide lessons for string players, as there were no local places for string students to study privately. It was later renamed the McHenry County Youth Orchestras (MCYO) and Community Arts Center (CAC). The Music Academy has grown to include lessons for instruments other than strings and now includes instruction for clarinet/sax, flute, oboe, piano, trumpet, viola, violin and cello. Most of our faculty have master’s degrees and all of them are performers as well as instructors. We believe this gives the students of MCMC an advantage as they learn not only the fundamentals of the instrument on which they are studying, they also learn how to perform, and always at the highest level. Our tag line is: Educating & Inspiring Exceptional Musicians.
In the 1990’s our name was changed from MCMC-CAC to the McHenry County Music Center (MCMC) to encompass all of our music programs - private music instruction for children through adults, three levels of youth orchestras and a choir program, which broke off in 2005.
In the Fall of 2012 through a generous local donor we began the Sage Strings Scholarship Initiative, loosely based on the El Sistema program in Venezuela. The program started with ten students and has now grown to over fifteen. This is a fully funded program for children whose families would otherwise be unable to afford music lessons. The children receive a rented stringed instrument, music, stand, accessories and free lessons for one year.
The McHenry County Music Center has won many awards over the years, the most recent being the Illinois Council of Orchestra’s (ICO) “Youth Orchestra of the Year-2010”.
